Communicable Attributes of God’s Love

  1. Good– Psalm 119:68: You are good and do good; Teach me Your statutes.; I Chron. 16:34– O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
  2. Just– Psalm 33:5: He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
  3. Gracious– Romans 5:20-2120 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.; Ephesians 1:7– In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
  4. Abundant in Kindness, Abundant in Truth, Slow to Anger– Psalm 86:15: But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
  5. Merciful– Ephesians 2:4-5: But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ; Luke 6:36: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
  6. Patient– 2 Pet. 3:8: But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
  7. Peaceful– 1 John 4:18: There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
  8. Compassionate- Lamentations 3:22-23: The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
  9. Sacrificial– 1 John 4:9-10: By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.; 1 John 3:16: We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.; John 15:13: Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
  10. Inseverable– Romans 8:38-39: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  11. Unconditional- Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
  12. Enduring– Romans 15:5: May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
  13. Reproving– Proverbs 3:12: For whom the Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
  14. Unfailing– John 13:1: Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.; Lamentations 3:22-23: The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.; I Chronicles 16:34: O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; I Cor. 13:8: Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there isknowledge, it will be done away. For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
  15. Bears Weaknesses– Romans 15:1-7– “Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.
  16. Forgiving– Matthew 16:21-3521 Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. 26 So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’ 27 And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ 30 But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed. 31 So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. 32 Then summoning him, his lord *said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ 34 And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. 35 My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.”
